Dymo 4XL      Raspberry Pi     Raspberry Pi case

Originally posted by Serena on ohplesiosaur.com.

Hey fellow small biz owners! Sick of plugging in your label printer every time you want to print shipping labels? I had my Dymo 4XL label printer right next to the computer and it was a drag. I'm moving to a new studio space (!!) and I wanted to keep my label printer near my order packaging station, so I needed another solution.

Fact: There are no wireless 4x6" shipping label printers. It's frustrating, and someone should make one. But in the meantime, if you're a little tech-savvy (or know someone who is), just DIY that sh*t by setting up a teeny tiny printer server!

Basically, I set up a Raspberry Pi as a print server. The whole project costs about €60 and took us (not advanced users) about an hour. If you've got some experience with this, I'm sure it's much quicker.

SUPPLIES:
You'll need...
- Dymo 4XL label printer
- Raspberry Pi 3
- power supply for Raspberry Pi
- case for Raspberry Pi
- 16GB micro SD card with adapter (usually sold together)
- computer with SD card slot (just for setup)
- monitor or TV with HDMI input (just for setup)
- wireless (via USB dongle) or wired keyboard & mouse (just for setup)

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Follow these instructions to format your micro SD card and install Raspbian (don't install NOOBS).

2. Put your Pi into its case. Insert the micro SD card you just set up. Connect the display, keyboard, and mouse. Connect your Pi's power supply and plug it in. The Pi will start up as soon as you plug in the power cord, and everything should be displayed on your monitor/TV.

3. Follow these instructions to set up the Pi as a print server.

Good to know:
If you're assigning a static IP for the Pi (recommended), you'll need to access your router admin. Type your router's IP address into your browser, then log in. To assign the static IP to the Pi, I googled my router brand and "assign static IP" for instructions. I'm not sure if this step is necessary, but we did it since it was recommended and it took us more time than all the other steps. Again, probably really easy for people who know this stuff.

4. That's it! Since you've set it up for your network, you won't need to use the monitor, keyboard, or mouse again unless you need to make changes to the network or settings. You can administer the print server remotely from any computer on your network.

One final note: The Raspberry Pi has 4 USB slots, so I'm going to get more mileage out of it by connecting a second thermal printer to print little paper gift notes when requested by customers. If you've got a very big shipping operation, you could also connect multiple printers to it and have them all on your network.

cork board with pins in a plastic container

Originally posted by Serena on ohplesiosaur.com.

So a couple of weeks ago, I ran out of space on my bulletin board for new pins. I knew I had to find a new storage solution for my enamel pin collection, but all my ideas either required an unpleasant amount of effort (multiple hand-embroidered pin hoops) or wall space I don't have (a huge bulletin board). I also had a lot of super picky requirements. I didn't want to endlessly rearrange pins as I added new ones, and I needed to be able to find and grab individual pins as needed, both for wearing and for Instagram features.

My solution worked out even better than I expected and meets all my requirements. The pins aren't out on display anymore, but they are safe, protected, organized, and have room to grow. And, best of all, it only cost €30 and 30 minutes! So here's what you'll need:

  • Iris Extra Large 4" x 6" Photo Keeper (Comes with 16 individual 4x6" plastic cases. They also have a small model with 6 plastic cases if your pin collection isn't as out of control as mine.)
  • 12x12" cork tiles (A set of four is enough for 12 out of the 16 plastic cases, so you'll need to get 2 sets if you want to fill all 16 cases.)
  • Hot glue gun w/ glue
  • Sharp scissors

 Iris photokeeper   cork board squares

1. Using a ruler and a pen, divide each 12x12" cork tile into six 4x6" sections.

Cork board with lines drawn on it

2. Cut along the lines! The cork will crumble a little at the edges, but the sharper your scissors are the less messy this will be. If you're using 1/4" thick cork as I did, you'll need 32 4x6" rectangles of cork because we have to double them up to get the desired thickness. If you're using 1/2" thick cork, you can probably get away with 16 rectangles.

Corkboard cut into sixths

3. If you're using 1/4" thick cork, glue two pieces together to create each cork insert for the plastic cases. I used just four generous dots of hot glue, one in each corner (lazy, remember?) but you can glue all around the edges and criss-cross the center for a sturdier bond. Repeat to make 16 cork inserts total.  If you're using 1/2" thick cork, skip this step.

two cork rectangles ready to be glued together

4. Glue a cork insert into each plastic case. I used two big dots of hot glue in the center-left and center-right and it was plenty to secure the cork. If you want to be able to remove the cork and pins together for occasional display, you can skip this step. Keep in mind that you can also photograph your pins right inside this case, since they're already on a nice cork background. :)

That's it! You're done! Take some time to admire your hard work-- all 30 minutes of it.
